Basics
  • Name: Wei Ying
  • Courtesy Name: Wuxian
  • Title: Yiling Laozu / Yiling Patriarch
  • Canon: Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
  • Birth Date: 31 October
  • Gender: Male
  • Species: Human
  • Active: [community profile] ryslig
  • Canonpoint(s): Immediately after his death @ [community profile] ryslig
Appearance
  • Visuals: here and here
  • Height: 186 cm / 6'1" ( original body ) & 180 cm / 5'9" ( as mo xuanyu )
› In his original body, Wei Wuxian was considered quite handsome, ranking fourth overall in the list of top best looking cultivator gentlemen of his generation. He has a fit, athletic build despite his tendency to skip out on training, largely acquired from simply running around and his considerable natural ability. His posture is garbage. He is described as often having an energetic warmth and a hint of a grin in his expression, although once he turned to Demonic Cultivation he grew much colder.

› As is common in his world, his black hair is kept long. In his youth, he wore it in a high ponytail and tied with a red ribbon ( a look he would also adopt again in his second life ). Later in his first life after becoming the Yiling Laozu he wore his hair mostly loose aside from a few pieces pulled back and tied with his same signature red ribbon. No matter how he wears it never seems to ever want to lie completely flat or neatly. Wei Wuxian's eyes are described as being grey although when he would activate his Demonic Cultivation abilities they would turn noticeably red.

› He possesses numerous scars — the most significant of which are the remnants of an arrow wound to the arm, a stab wound to the gut, and a brand on his chest in the shape of the Qishan Wen Sect Sigil.

› Specifically to [community profile] ryslig he has many more scars as a result of his body being restored. As such, his forearms in particular bear numerous pale scars that make it seem like they all fit together like puzzle pieces. These grow less intricate further up on his arms ( like radiating cracks ) although his shoulders and neck also have what appear to be human-shaped bite marks.

Fashion › In his youth, Wei Wuxian wore the purple robes of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect.

› He is best known for wearing black robes with red and grey details and would likely probably stick more or less to this edgelord colour scheme given more options. As the Yiling Patriarch his dark grey robes featured a red flame motif on the large sleeves. › He seems opposed to the idea of keeping his robes closed up like they should be ( compared to what some would consider to be proper ) and so he tends to show off quite a bit of his chest~
Demeanor & Attitude › Wei Wuxian is known for his energetic personality, impulsiveness, and penchant for mischief, caring little for the rules. He is often described as "shameless" or having a "thick face" for his willingness to say and do things that would embarrass and shame others. He enjoys playing around and teasing others.

› He does care deeply for others despite how flippant he might seem at any other time, especially when it comes to those he loves. He possesses a strong sense of justice and a self-sacrificing spirit, willing to take whatever comes his way if he feels like he's doing what is right.

› He is a creative and inventive thinker, having invented and mastered his Demonic Cultivation in only three months. He also created other useful items that the cultivation world would later adopt as tools for night-hunting.

› Wei Wuxian can and will be dramatic as hell.

› His trait list for [community profile] ryslig is as follows:
  • selfless
  • protective
  • just
  • resourceful
  • shameless
  • dramatic
  • impulsive
  • self-destructive
  • vengeful
  • low self-worth
  • Voice › An example can be found here. In general he tends to put plenty of feeling and inflection into his voice when he speaks and his expression can be gleaned almost just from his tone alone.
Skills & Abilities Cultivation Knowledge / Training: training in martial arts ( hand to hand combat ) resulting in increased strength, speed, and agility, as well as swordsmanship. Also well-versed in qi manipulation and spiritual practises that grant the ability to deal with ghosts, monsters, and other troublesome creatures. As he was raised as a disciple of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect he was trained in their unique style, as each Sect has a slightly different approach and a unique sword style.

Demonic Cultivation: Considered "cheating" as compared to traditional cultivation as it allows the user to bypass traditional methods and the need for a golden core to execute powerful techniques. It relies on external "resentful energy" for power which overtime has a negative, corrupting effect on the user. As he invented several techniques and items he naturally retains the knowledge gained. Some examples include the ability to "reverse" the effects of traditionally written talismans, altering them with the use of human blood as ink to alter how they work. Another example is Empathy which involves allowing a spirit to temporarily possess him in order to more or less grant the spirit to tell its story via memory sharing. It comes with a risk in that one can become lost if the spirit is particularly strong but that's never stopped him.

Martial Arts: To expand from the above, Wei Wuxian is from a genre where this is a central component. His is skilled in combat and as a swordsman ( although by now he is somewhat out of practise ), possesses a high level of ability as an archer, and has been capable of jumping up onto roofs with ease and snatching shot arrows right out of the air.

Six Arts: The gentlemanly arts of ancient China, which include rites ( ex. tea drinking, mourning, governance, knowledge of names and titles, morality, history, etc. ), music ( he plays the dizi flute quite well ), horsemanship, maths, and calligraphy. His handwriting has been pointed out as particularly loose and not exactly ideal, but if he puts his mind to it he is very capable of better skill with a brush and is actually a very good artist.

Intelligence: He has a real talent for improvising and adapting on the fly and his general demeanour likely leads most to assume that he isn't nearly as bright or observant as he is. He is willing to think outside the box, looking past moral judgments and taboos to achieve a goal, if he must. He has a lot of knowledge that serves him in canon as he spends his time ( in his second life ) trying to solve problems and unravel a mystery.

Spice + Alcohol Tolerance: He is known to drink liquor like water and handle it well. Yunmeng is known for its spicy cuisine but he takes it even a step further to the point that most people consider his cooking inedible and have described it as suffering.

Other Characters: Jongdae Lee & Traejan Lightrend

    CHARACTER INFORMATION
    Character Name: Wei Wuxian *
*his courtesy name; he is also referred to as "Wei Ying" ( birthname ) and "Yiling Patriarch / Yiling Laozu"
    Age: early-mid 20s
Canon: Mo Dao Zu Shi ( novel )
Canon Point: Immediately after his death~
Character Information: here ( only the 'First Life' section is relevant to to his canon point )

    Personality:
Even if the circumstances that would ultimately carry Wei Wuxian down the path to becoming the Yiling Patriarch hadn't happened — and by extension earned him the reputation of one of the most reviled individuals in the cultivation world — he would have probably found himself at odds with the status quo sooner or later. Wei Wuxian was viewed as a force of chaos among the pillars of tradition and virtue upon which the order of the cultivation world is built, at first only in the most benign sense of carefree, youthful rebellion but eventually culminating in the invention of a new, dark form of power.

The world into which Wei Wuxian was born places strong emphasis on bloodlines and extended families and follows a shared philosophical and ethical tradition. Society is laid out in a very neat, very old little box and Wei Wuxian was simply not meant to fit into it. He was reminded of this often and directly and it would come to have a profound effect on his sense of self-worth over time.

Right from the beginning Wei Wuxian lacked one major qualifier for greatness as compared to those of the esteemed and noble bloodlines of the Great Sects he was a nobody. His father was a loyal servant of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect while his mother was a rogue cultivator and a woman whom Sect Leader Jiang Fengmian had had feelings for in the past. When both of his parents died during a night-hunt Wei Wuxian was orphaned at age six and struggled for survival alone on the streets. At times he was even forced to contend with feral dogs for food and shelter, a traumatic experience that would leave him cripplingly cynophobic.

Wei Wuxian has a notably bad memory going all the way back to the early days of his life. He remembers very little of his mother as a person but recalls a particular saying:
"Remember the things others do for you, not the things you do for others. Only when people don’t hold so much in their hearts would they finally feel free.”
The implicit message in his mother's words is to forget the bad things in life and remember only the good, as someone who only holds on to good things will certainly feel much more free than someone who doesn't. He forgets as a survival mechanism and the more unpleasant something is the more quickly he represses and avoids it. This is why he can recall in vivid detail the happiest times from his youth such as his encounters with Lan Wangji or the precise taste of his shijie's lotus soup, while having so many gaps in his memory about things that happened just before his death — even though those events happened much more recently. He only forgets the moment Lan Wangji confesses his feelings — easily the most important thing Lan Wangji has ever said to him — because he is so badly broken over what had happened in the Nightless City that his mind could only do its best to obliterate as much of those awful things as possible. This is one reason why he can still joke and carry on like everything is fine even after the many hardships and traumas he experiences over the course of his life.

Although Jiang Fengmian encourages Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng to become friends in the beginning, the two are ultimately pitted against one another their entire lives. Jiang Cheng's mother Madame Yu was relentless in her unwillingness to see Wei Wuxian's presence as anything less than an offence and an inconvenience given that her husband sparked many rumours about his intentions in adopting the orphan son of his former beloved. She took notice of Wei Wuxian's natural talent but offered only backhanded compliments intended to shame him, especially when they would call attention to Jiang Cheng's inability to surpass him. Her callous desire to wound her husband and insult Wei Wuxian would also have a negative impact on his relationship with his sworn brother. The fact that Jiang Fengmian would praise him but not his own son was also troubling — Wei Wuxian felt undeserving of what love he actually received because it comes at the cost of hurting his brother. He is made to always feel like an outsider indebted to the Yunmeng Jiang Sect who does not or should not belong. In the end, both his "aunt" and "uncle" leave him feeling like he must take care of his siblings because that is the only value his unworthy self possessed. The only truly unconditional love he received was from his older adoptive sister, Jiang Yanli, but it was too little to overcome the rest.

What most people tend to notice is that Wei Wuxian is a carefree, self-indulgent joker who never seems to be able to avoid keeping his nose out of trouble. Many take this attitude as being ridiculous or insensitive, but those who are close to him ( mostly Lan Wangji, to be honest ) can sense the difference and what depth there is to what isn't being said beneath the surface. His upbringing certainly encourages it as well, as he was raised and trained alongside the heir to the Yunmeng Jiang Sect but was afforded a leniency that Jiang Cheng was not. Despite being the senior disciple he followed no particular regimen nor did he study, instead spending his time doing leisurely things as he pleased. He was able to enjoy all the clout of his position with zero consequences or responsibilities. He struggles to sit still and be quiet even in a tense situation, most likely to be the guy who speaks up when he probably shouldn't just to make a comment. One particularly effective avenue for fun? Snooping. It's not even for particularly dishonest reasons as much as it is curiosity or trying to get to the bottom of a mystery. He is more than capable of doing constructive things though as when he puts his mind to it. He is also a skilled artist ( he drew a very realistic portrait of Lan Wangji as a gift to commemorate their month of detention together ) even though his handwriting is known to be very sloppy.

There is a concept of "face" in his culture which is fairly complex. By definition it can be given or earned, taken away or lost. It is more than just one's ego as it's how one is perceived by others and most people are willing to go to great lengths to avoid losing face. Wei Wuxian is said to have "a very thick face", meaning that he is shameless. He managed it partly due to his position but also because he never believed he deserved that position in the first place. Many of his choices come from a place of "what do I have to lose?", especially if the outcome benefits the greater good of anyone else. He won't think twice about leaping into danger to save someone else, even if it's just an attempt. On more than one occasion his willingness to play the hero resulted in him needing to be rescued himself — but it's the thought that counts, right?

Wei Wuxian's selflessness easily crosses the line from noble gesture to self-destructive several times throughout his life. At first it took the form of mild risk taking, such as sneaking out to smuggle forbidden alcohol into the Cloud Recesses for his friends. Eventually it escalates, to the point that he would have been willing to lose his hand if it would have satisfied the Qishan Wen Sect and prevented the massacre of Lotus Pier. His ultimate sacrifice is the transplant of his golden core into Jiang Cheng after Jiang Cheng's had been melted — a procedure with only a fifty percent chance of success that he endures completely awake for two nights and a day. It also meant eventually defecting from the Sect and the people that he loves and sacrificed for when he felt he could do no more good for them and needed instead to shield them from the bad.

It's no wonder then that most attempts to scold him or make him see the error of his ways fall completely flat. In most cases he doesn't think much at all of what affects only himself be it punishment or insult. This tends to make him impulsive. It becomes a much different story when his actions start impacting other people around him in ways he never expects. It's one thing to always be dragging Jiang Cheng into trouble even if he got off easy and his brother would endure a stricter punishment but another matter entirely to witness the unintended effects of his direct actions.

The first time Wei Wuxian really experiences this is after he assaults Jin Zixuan in the Cloud Recesses. He overheard an unkind comment about Jiang Yanli, whom Jin Zixuan was arranged to marry at the time. Wei Wuxian refuses to tolerate any disrespect towards his beloved shijie and acts rashly, as he always had. Wei Wuxian was dismissed early from the Cloud Recesses and sent home with Jiang Fengmian — who ultimately lets this go too — but could not foresee that he would also decide to call off the engagement entirely. Although this meant that Madame Yu only grew more hostile towards him as she blamed him for ruining everything, it is the guilt he feels over hurting his sister that affects him far worse.

Wei Wuxian could not have accomplished all that he did if he wasn't an intelligent, inventive, and resourceful person. Thrown into the Yiling Burial Mounds alone, unarmed, and utterly defenceless without his golden core he is able to not only survive his ordeal but emerge from it with a mastery of skills no one had ever dared explore before. He had once read about curses observed in a distant land but his theories regarding the use of resentful energy were uniquely his own. Similarly, after discovering a sword inside the shell of the Tortoise of Slaughter that had steeped for hundreds of years in the resentful energy of the monster's victims, he manages to recover it and create the Stygian Tiger Seal. He also invents several other useful items that would be adopted by the cultivation world after his death — including the Spirit-Attracting Flag and Evil-Detecting Compass — even though some of those inventions were still left unfinished at the time of his death.

While the cultivation world operates as its own self-governing body that can and will interpret its own rules in a rather fluid sort of way, Wei Wuxian has a strong sense of justice that is quite firm by comparison. Even after following the "crooked path" he still has an awareness of what is right and wrong. As for Demonic Cultivation, he accepts it simply because he had no choice if he wanted to help take back what was lost and demand vengeance from the Wens. When he was younger and proposed his ideas in front of the great master Lan Qiren and his peers he was scolded but still felt that completely ignoring a perfectly good source of power was a failing on the part of the cultivation world at large. Still, he said at the time that he saw no reason to leave the "nice, broad road" that was the traditional path of cultivation and walk on "a single-plank bridge on a dark, narrow river". Even when he secludes himself in the Burial Mounds with the Wen Remnant and people name him the Yiling Patriarch he does not actively seek out disciples to amass power; he simply wanted to live quietly and use his abilities to keep safe the people living under his protection.

This immovable sense of justice is problematic for him on several occasions. Though he did not intend to act in such a way as to offend the Qishan Wen Sect, he could not hold himself back from defending someone who was going to be used as monster bait. While it was very likely that the aggressive, tyrannical Qishan Wen Sect would have shown up at Lotus Pier's door eventually, Wei Wuxian's actions provide them with a very good excuse and the massacre of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect is blamed on him by the end. The final words of Madame Yu and Jiang Fengmian only reinforce the message he received his entire life — that his only value is what he can do and in that case it meant protecting Jiang Cheng no matter the cost. His sense of justice demanded he give up everything he had for his brother so that Jiang Cheng could rebuild what was taken from him and he does so without resentment. Wei Wuxian felt that he was nothing and so he could live with nothing but Jiang Cheng, whose entire life was cultivation, would never be able to endure it.

A desire for revenge and the feeling of satisfaction in seeing his enemies suffer eventually reveals a wrathful side to him, enabling him to perform acts that are particularly cruel or ruthless. His heavy use of resentful energy at this time on top of his prolonged time on the Burial Mounds before his return contributed as well. He plans and carries out vicious revenge against Wen Chao, Wang Lingjiao, and Wen Zhuliu for the role they played in the massacre at Lotus Pier, torturing them physically and psychologically while pursuing them for days on end and killing any other Qishan Wen cultivators he discovers along the way. Later, after joining the battles during the Sunshot Campaign, he raises the dead Qishan Wen cultivators who fell in battle and sets them upon their friends and family. Once the Sunshot Campaign ends, he chooses to embrace his power instead of giving it up and despite the concerns of others he refuses to move from his stance that everything would be fine. He claims to know exactly what he's doing and is sure that he can control it, even as he grew increasingly unstable and paranoid. None of the lesser cultivators dared say a word but anyone could see how feared Wei Wuxian had become even while he was still welcome in Yunmeng, even though he was content simply returning to his old, hedonistic ways. These fears weren't really unfounded as Wei Wuxian very casually surrounded himself with ghouls and ghosts under his control, using them in frivolous ways to serve him. On one occasion Lan Wangji was traveling through Yunmeng and Wei Wuxian got his attention by having several pretty ghost girls toss flowers at him playfully.

His power was beginning to change him in subtle ways that he couldn't see for himself. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji notice in the beginning but neither can reason with him. As a result of their experiences, none of them can manage to communicate what needs desperately to be said at that time. Wei Wuxian truly believes that no one loves nor cares for him and he is unable to read into the subtleties of their words and actions to see the things they cannot say. For all his intelligence and cleverness in some areas, Wei Wuxian is incredibly obtuse in others. He's equally as terrible in communicating, as he tends to speak indirectly about things like feelings. It's even more difficult for Lan Wangji who does truly, almost desperately love him as Wei Wuxian deliberately holds him at a distance. He often uses the words "thank you" when they'd part ways over the course of their lives and in particular to draw attention to Lan Wangji's nobility while at the same time denigrating himself. Wei Wuxian felt that he was a little bit worse every time they saw each other and that they didn't seem to be suitable as friends. This would also deteriorate into the belief later on that Lan Wangji only wanted to kill him.

Perhaps not unfairly given the circumstances, Wei Wuxian grows increasingly frustrated with his deteriorating image in the world as even if something is untrue he can really do nothing to counter it. He's used to people disagreeing with him — they have all his life — but to know people have their minds made up about him as soon as they hear his name is something he's not had to deal with before. Much later, in his second life, he would come to learn that he is a polarising figure and that just seems to be a particular effect he has on people whether he likes it or not. At best he is the "untamed hero" and at worst his tendency to offend people wherever he goes means people will always blame him and seek revenge against him for something whether or not he is actually involved. However, at this time in his first life Wei Wuxian has no idea and he's far from a place in his mind where he can accept it. Rather, it feeds into a budding victim complex. This together with his increasing instability and paranoia cause him to accidentally lose control and kill Jin Zixuan while he had been traveling to attend the birthday celebration of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli's newborn son, Jin Ling. Nearing the end of his life and his final confrontations, a devastated Wei Wuxian starts to respond more like a cornered animal than a person. His hostility becomes much more unpredictable and free-floating and he reacts even to small slights such as overhearing gossip with particularly harsh violence. In the grip of corruption and his immense grief, he triggers the event that would come to be known as the Bloodbath of Nightless City.

When it was all over, Wei Wuxian does the one thing he has always been able to do — forget. He seems to dissociate completely, somehow imagining that he finds his way to safety on his own despite the numerous injuries he received. He has no recollection whatsoever of what happened after he eventually staggered away from the battle. He does not recall Lan Wangji carrying him away or his painful confession while he pours spiritual energy into Wei Wuxian to mend his wounds and save his life. When someone finally does say the things he needs to hear it's far too late and Wei Wuxian is too out of his mind to hear them and only responds with "get lost". The last thing he ever does in his first life is another sacrificial one as he works to destroy the Stygian Tiger Seal and at the very least try to prevent any more lives from being lost to its power. He succeeds in destroying half of it but his body is torn apart by spiritual backlash before he can destroy it completely.
